Bobcat sluggers end season at Districts, lose to Farwell

The Houghton Lake High School varsity baseball squad concluded its season following an 11-2 loss to Farwell June 4 at the District tournament in Clare.

“We ended the season on a sour note,” Houghton Lake coach Scott Bates said.

“It was extremely hot outside,” he said, “however, the kids still played hard.”

Senior Matt Webster started the game on the mound. He pitched the first five innings and allowed nine runs, five of which were earned. He was relieved by fellow senior Jared Orban who pitched the remaining innings and allowed two runs.

At the plate, Houghton Lake was led by Eric Hurst who hit 3-4 and had a run. Matt Webster hit 1-4 with an RBI and Kasey Turner recorded a hit.

“We had a good year,” Bates said adding that his squad achieved nine total wins on the season.

“I had fun coaching and I am looking forward to next year,” he said.

In the other District semifinal Clare defeated Harrison 15-0. In the District finale Clare defeated Farwell 17-2 in just four innings punching their ticket to the Regional tournament.
