Houghton Lake treated for milfoil

Houghton Lake Improvement Board Secretary/Treasurer Bob Gandolfi said 1,729 acres of Houghton Lake received treatment with herbicide this week to control Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM). Gandolfi said the price tag for this year’s treatment of the lake is “just under $600,000.”

He said treatment areas were determined using aquatic plant surveys conducted by consulting firm Progressive AE June 14-17. Gandolfi said no treatment occurred in the lake’s North Bay which had an increase in EWM growth of 10 acres. He said the area was not treated due to the small size of the increase as well as to keep from disturbing an effort by the Houghton Lake Lake Association to re-introduce wild rice in the lake’s North Bay.
