Third year of Sara’s Bears to be celebrated Aug. 28

To commemorate the third anniversary of Sara’s Bears, a program initiated by the late Sara Murdoch, Houghton Lake, a celebration will be held Aug. 28 at Houghton Lake United Methodist Church, where she was a member.

Coffee and cake will be served in between the Sunday morning worship services from 10 to 10:30 a.m. A balloon release is planned sometime between 10 and 11 a.m. Representatives from Houghton Lake area EMS services, Mercy Hospital Grayling and walk-in clinics will be on hand to share in the celebration.

Guests are encouraged to bring Teddy bears to continue Murdoch’s work.

Murdoch, 47, was the daughter of Betty and the late Donald Murdoch. She moved to Houghton Lake in 2004 from Chattanooga, TN. Born with cerebral palsy, she communicated with a keyboard device. She also battled cancer before her death in September, 2010.

Murdoch began the Sara’s Bears program with the help of people at her church. She was motivated to do something for kids after seeing an accident on M-55 which involved children. She told her mother that those children should have a bear to hug after the trauma of the accident.

Sara’s Bears has grown since Murdoch started collecting bears three years ago. Bears have been provided to children by way of Denton Township EMS, Houghton Lake Ambulance and area health clinics and doctor’s offices.

For information on the anniversary celebration, call Betty Murdoch at 366- 7853.
