Bobcats prepare for Homecoming with Spirit Week
This year’s Homecoming theme is Candyland and students will compete during Spirit Week for the spirit award.
Spirit Week began with “class color and hat day” on Monday. “Mismatch day” was Tuesday and “holiday day” was the theme for Wednesday. Scheduled for Thursday is “decades day” and Friday is “green and white day.”
Facing off in the 33rd Annual Powder Puff football game, which was played on Tuesday, were the Freshmen and Seniors, coached by Mike Burnside, Tom Garrett and Steve LeMire versus the Sophomores and Juniors, coached by Brian Vaughn and Mike Peters. In the end, the Freshmen and Seniors won the contest, 27-14.
A pregame tailgate will begin at 6 p.m. before the Homecoming Game at 7 p.m. The Houghton Lake Marching Band under the director of Band Major Rachel Baumgardner will play “Dynamite,” “Ice Castles” and “Somewhere Out There” during half-time.
The 2011 Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned during half-time of the football game.

Brooke Mainville is the daughter of Trent and Tara Mainville of Prudenville. She likes to dance, hang out with her friends and play with her dogs. She also participates in volleyball and is a member of the Houghton Lake Chamber Choir. She plans to attend Michigan State University to prepare for a career as a nurse anesthetist.
Kyle Bates is the son of Scott and Denise Bates of Houghton Lake. He enjoys playing football, basketball and baseball. In his spare time he likes to hunt, hang out with his friends and watch football. He plans to attend Ferris State University to obtain a degree in optometry.
Leah King is the daughter of Norma and Alan King of Houghton Lake. She enjoys horseback riding and she is a member of the choir. She plans to attend Michigan State University to become a teacher.
Dakota Kolo is the son of Tony and Christina Kolo and Harvey Winkler of Prudenville. Kolo likes to go tubing, hunting, fishing, snowboarding, reading Nicholas Sparks books and cruising for girls at the sandbar. He also enjoys playing football and baseball. In the future, he plans to enlist in the Marines and pursue a career in law enforcement.
Brittany Gass is the daughter of Jerry and Margaret Gass of Houghton Lake. She enjoys dancing, spending time with her friends, boating, tubing, tanning, watching football and being an active member of the Student Senate. She plans to attend Grand Valley State University to prepare for a career as a nurse practitioner.
Pat Gaitan is the son of Jackie and Randy Harvey of Prudenville. He enjoys spending time with his friends, dancing, jet skiing, tubing, snowboarding and playing football and basketball. He plans to attend Central Michigan University to pursue a career in physical therapy.
Kaitlyn Hans is the daughter of Kevin and Michelle Hans of Prudenville. She enjoys dancing, working, hanging out with her friends and watching football. She also likes to play basketball and softball. She plans to attend Michigan State University for pre-medicine and she hopes to pursue a career as an emergency room doctor in the pediatric department.
Kasey Turner is the son of Kirk and Dawn Turner of Houghton Lake. He enjoys riding his dirt bike, tubing, boating and hanging out with friends. He also enjoys playing football, basketball and baseball. He plans to join the Marines with his fellow classmate Dakota Kolo.
Chloe Cryderman is the daughter of Brent and Joann Cryderman of Houghton Lake. She is the Key Club president and enjoys musicals and being in the choir. She plans to attend Calvin College to study music education.
Kyle Pope is the son of Jeff and Lynn Pope of Merritt. He enjoys dirt biking, snowboarding, football, working out, tanning and white water rafting. He plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University for diesel mechanics.
Representing their classes on the Homecoming Court are:
Freshman Vanessa Wallace, the daughter of Karen and Larry Wallace of Houghton Lake. She enjoys playing volleyball, participating in sideline cheer, competitive cheer, track and gymnastics. She plans to attend Michigan State University to purse a career in orthodontics.
Freshman Tommy Press is the son of Lorri and Steve Press of Houghton Lake. He enjoys swimming, tubing, boating, snowmobiling and hanging out with his friends. He is the vice-president of the Freshman class and participates in track, golf, baseball, basketball and football. He plans to go to college to become a police officer and later marry and have two boys.
Sophomore Tyler Sluck is the son of David Sluck and Linda Sellen of Prudenville. He enjoys hunting, football and basketball. He plans to attend Central Michigan University to study sports medicine and become a physical therapist.
Sophomore Brianna Rathbun is the daughter of Dan and Kim Rathbun of Prudenville. She enjoys hanging out with her friends and family and fishing. She also enjoys going to football, soccer, basketball and volleyball games. She participates in track, soccer and volleyball. She plans to attend a private Christian college and pursue a career as a children’s psychologist or doctor.
Junior Lenora Pappas is the daughter of Chris and Randi Pappas of Roscommon. She like to play softball, hunt and hang out with her friends. She plans to attend Michigan State University and play softball.
Junior David Duncan is the son of Shannon M. Duncan of Prudenville. He plays football and is a wrestler. He enjoys hunting, riding dirt bikes, spending time on the water and spending time with his family and friends. He plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University to study in the medical field.
Homecoming Princess MaKenzie Ames-Surratt is a first grader in Mrs. Linda Smyk’s class. She is the daughter of Krista Plott and Emory Ames. She loves everything about school. She enjoys playing with her brother, Chase and her sisters, Taylor and Baily at the park and flying high on the swings. She also likes singing and dancing to her favorite music.
Homecoming Prince is first grader Maddox Mead of Mrs. Jill Trahan’s class. The son of Betsy and Larry Mead, he enjoys going to school especially physical education. Maddox has a love of all sports and he participates in T-Ball, basketball and the Houghton Lake Soccer Association’s under-eight division. He also enjoys playing X-Box 360.
