Herbert J. Smith Jr.

Longtime Houghton Lake resident, businessman and Roscommon County Clerk Herbert J. Smith Jr., 94, died Sept. 26, 2011 at his residence at the Michigan Masonic Home, Alma.

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 5, 1917, in Midland, the son of Herbert J. and Arlene (Callahan) Smith. He graduated from Houghton Lake High School in 1936 and worked for Dow Chemical Company until 1945.

He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Houghton Lake, and was a member of the Executive Council of the Diocese of Michigan for three years.

He served as Roscommon County Clerk and Register of Deeds from 1949 to 1960. He was the state president of the Michigan Register of Deeds Association in 1955-56 and received life memberships in both the Michigan County Clerk’s Association and the Michigan Register of Deeds Association. He was Deputy Roscommon County Treasurer in 1961 and Justice of the Peace for Roscommon Township from 1961 to 1965. In December of 1998, he was appointed Deputy Probate Register for the sole purpose of conducting the Oath of Office Ceremony for the Honorable Michael J. Baumgartner as Judge for the 34th Judicial Circuit, Michigan.

He was a member of the first Kiwanis Club organized at Houghton Lake in the 1950’s.

Mr. Smith was a Master Mason and a life member of Centre Lodge, Midland and was affiliated with the Houghton Lake Lodge No. 579 F&AM since May 25, 1944. He was a member of the Elf Khurafeh Shrine Temple, Saginaw since 1974 and a life member of Midland Chapter No. 121 Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Houghton Lake Chapter No. 514 Order of Eastern Star.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Helen (Courneya) Smith, a son, Herbert J. Smith III, brother Edward and two sisters Ethelyn Sullivan and Evelyn Stone.

He is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Robert) Bismark of Saginaw, five grandchildren, Tamara (Stephen) Balyo of Roscommon, Timothy (Esther) Lord of Lansing, Tricia (Anthony) Rodebaugh, Lansing, Caroline (Bill) Nosal of Ashburn, VA and Peter (Sarah) Smith of Chevy Chase, MD; 14 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many other relatives.

Services will be held Oct. 3, at the Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel at 11 a.m. Visitation will be Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roscommon Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital. Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake, handled the arrangements.
