Burger among Camp nominees for U.S. Service Academies

Congressman Dave Camp (R-Midland) announced last week the nominations of 14 local students, including one from Roscommon, for admission to the service academies they wish to enroll, including the United States Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Merchant Marine.

“It is an honor to nominate these outstanding students for admission to our nation’s fine service academies,” said Camp. “These bright and courageous students are drawn to serve their country, and I am confident they will embark on careers that will make their families, our community, and our nation proud.”

Among the nominees is Michael J. Burger of Roscommon. According to a press release from Camp’s office, the “nominated students have demonstrated dedication in the classroom, leadership qualities and patriotism for the United States.”

Others nominees from Michigan’s Fourth Congressional district included: Gerrit Bakker of Alma, Forrest Bartz of Stanton, Zachary Eisenlord of Saginaw, Ashlee Fish of Alma, Randi Fracassi of Blanchard, Tyler Hansen of Williamsburg, Jonathan Johnson of Mount Pleasant, Ryan McDonnell of Traverse City, Brandon McKee of Traverse City, Anthony Ventocilla of Ithaca, Bailey R. Colon-Waite of Lakeview, Benjamin A. Kozuch of Midland, and Niklas Lambourn of Mount Pleasant.

Each year, the limited number of available nominations is highly competitive. Deadlines for applications for 2012 admissions was last November, and applicants will receive decisions beginning in April. Academy Board interviews were held in early December. Applicants interested in applying must meet eligibility requirements established by law and be nominated from an authorized person, including a member of the United States Senate or House of Representatives. Applicants must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed their 23rd birthday, and must be a United States citizen.
