BOB teams advance to ‘finals’ in respective match-ups


HOUGHTON LAKE BATTLERS Eight Battle of the Books teams, representing Houghton Lake Public Library, battled it out Saturday in the Houghton Lake High School cafeteria. Supported by their coaches, friends and family, the following teams participated: B.O.B.Cats, Wild Popcorn Readers, The Final Bookworms, The Lightning Readers, Whilks, The Fire Readers II, Skittles and Gila Readers. BOB teams representing Houghton Lake Public Library and Roscommon Area District Library held their battles Saturday, as did teams from the Ardis Missaukee District Library (Lake City) and the Otsego County Public Library (Gaylord).


BOB ELIMINATION ROUND The Roscommon Area District Library Battle of the Books teams met for the BOB elimination battle on March 10 at Roscommon Elementary. Houghton Lake Public Library

The first place Final Bookworms, coached by Ann Shavalia and Angela Shavalia, consist of April Johnson, Julia Lee, Makayla Caster, Sarah Williams and Grace Sura.

The second place B.O.B.Cats members, Austin Schultz, Jackson Murphy, Joey Peterson, David Johnson and Nathan Talbot, were coached by Paull Fry and Alex Wilcox.

(Courtesy photo) The Whilks team, which placed third, consisted of Lillian Lambert, Ivy Ingleson, Terran Horger, Chloe Koupal and Alliyah Wagner. They were coached by Amy Koupal.

The Fire Readers II team earned the Spirit Award. The team, consisting of Calvin Caster, Peyton Daugherty, Zack White and Earl McGregor, were coached by Brandy Daugherty and Preston Daugherty. (Earl McGregor was absent at the elimination battle, but the team “mascot,” Logan Hacker cheered them on.) The award was presented for dressing up, team support/signs in the audience and good sportsmanship.

Members of the Wild Popcorn Readers were Harli Broge, Nick Ferris, Alyssa Davies, Zoe Wilson and Valerie LaBonte and they were coached by Michelle Broge and Pat Gross. The Lightning Readers, coached by Carol Chidester and Gloria Owaski, consisted of Hannah Pagel, Kaylyn Allen, Alexis Hodgkin and Erica Morgan.

The Skittles team, coached by Liz Warner, consisted of Gloria Lambert, Brook Pepper, Mairen Lang and Stephanie Eckstorm. Members of the Gila Readers team were Jeremy Bowler, James Loughray, Cameron Allport, Caleb Lytle and Grace LaBonte and they were coached by Lori Bowler and Makayla Bowler.

Roscommon Area District Library

The Book Warriors, coached by Joyce Ballard, took first place at RADL’s Elimination

The Rapid Readers of Roscommon II, including Ryan Brooks, Shawn Witherspoon, Eric Turner, Emma Tussey and Alyssa Ostling, were coached by Calvin Witherspoon and Karen Brooks.

Third place was awarded to the Emergency BOB Readers, consisting of Daryl Larive, Brian Larive, Kelsey Finley and Cheyenne Larive. They were coached by Chris Larive and Amanda Braciak.

The other four teams participating were: The 5 Book A Teers, coached by Pat and Margaret DeCenso, consists of Naomi Bates, Michael Ficaj, Brennan Kieb, Joshua Serum and Ian Wybraniec. The Speed Readers, coached by Christina Young, consists of Caitlin Anderson, Anna Erikson, Jessica Oakes, Stephanie Tulgetske and Zoe Tomes. The Cute Pups, coached by Mary Morgan, Lori Martin and Dawn Branson, consists of Patrick Branson, Savanah Clark, Alyson Martin, Marisa Morgan and Tiffany Morgan. The Speed Cheetahs, coached by Reva Fowler, consists of Ashlee Aardema, Cassandra Fowler, Steffanie Fowler and Richard Wilson.
