Beverly Jean Shoemaker
Beverly Jean Shoemaker, 83, Prudenville, died March 29, 2012, at Houghton Lake.
Christler Funeral Home, Prudenville Chapel, handled arrangements. A service was held April 2 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Douglas Stockwell officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Alma. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 526 West Chisholm, Alpena, MI 49707.
She was born June 25, 1928, in Alma, the daughter of Chester and Vergil (Whitcraft) Thompson. She graduated from Alma High School in 1946. She and Richard Shoemaker were united in marriage Jan. 3, 1947, in Rosebush and they have shared more than 65 years of marriage.
Mrs. Shoemaker began working at the Alma Dairy and later worked for the late Dr. Frank Wassenaar of Alma as a dental assistant. She also worked as a bank teller in Alma and later in West Branch. She was socially active and was a member of the Pine River Country Club golf league and the West Branch Country Club golf league. She was also a member of the Gratiot Community Hospital Auxiliary and the West Branch Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. In Roscommon she was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary, Post 4159.
She and her husband were active in the Alma Dance Club and she was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alma and the Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church in Prudenville.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Elaine Webster of Lansing.
Surviving Mrs. Shoemaker are her husband, Richard Shoemaker of Prudenville; sons, Dr. Rod Shoemaker of Saginaw and Michael (Linda) Shoemaker of Lake Ann; grandsons, Peter Shoemaker of Newport, RI, and Joseph Shoemaker of Lake Placid, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, Jill (William) Stoneman and Merlyn (Ann) Thompson of Breckenridge.
