Bobcats upend Beavers in five sets

The Houghton Lake High School varsity volleyball team earned its first Jack Pine Conference victory after defeating Beaverton 3-2 Sept. 19 at Beaverton.

The Bobcats opened the night with a 25-16 set one victory.

Beaverton then battled back into the match taking the next two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-21, respectively.

Houghton Lake clawed back into the match in the fourth set winning 25-20 to force a fifth and final set.

In the final set, Houghton Lake defeated Beaverton in extra points, 16-14, to win the match.

“After game one, I was really hoping the girls would put together a whole solid night,” Houghton Lake Coach Angie Dalak said. “We quickly proved that wrong by coming out flat in games two and three.”

Dalak reported that during sets two and three, the Bobcats had five service errors which is the highest amount during a match this season.

“Luckily in game four we came out with some life,” Dalak said. “We jumped out to a 10-2 lead with some great serving by Mary Rieger and Sarah Garrett. Beaverton fought their way back into the game, but the girls worked together and got the job done.”

“For the fifth game, we were neck and neck the whole time until Sarah Garrett again dropped in some great serves,” Dalak said.

Maddee Winkler led the ’Cats with 20 service points, 13 kills, seven digs, four aces and three block-kills. Mary Rieger had 29 assists, 10 service points, nine digs, five kills and two block-kills. Other leading performers from Houghton Lake included Sarah Garrett who had 20 service points, 20 digs and four aces; Cassie Kuenzer had 23 service points, 13 digs and four aces; Hope Cameron had seven kills and two block-kills and Alee Winkler had 14 service points, 13 kills, five digs and an ace.

“I am very happy that we got this conference win,” Dalak said. “It means even more that we were able to come back after dropping two games. The Winkler sisters had a great, solid night, Mary’s setting was right on and our defense really kicked it into gear.”

With the victory, Houghton Lake improves to 14-12-3 on the season and stands at 1-2 in the JPC.
