Eight to take court for ’Cats

Winter Sports Preview
By Mike Metzger

The 2012 Houghton Lake High School girls varsity basketball team will feature eight players during Coach Angie Dalak’s second year at the helm.

The squad will have two seniors (one of which is in her first year playing varsity basketball), two juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen.

Coach Dalak reported that her team will rely on speed this season noting that there is not much in terms of size.

“We will be a more balanced team,” Dalak said. “We will be quick and will not ‘wow’ anyone at any position.”

Dalak reported that Kelly Julin’s knowledge of the game will be missed but added that many of the players are starting to step up and fill that role.

In terms of leadership, Dalak reported that senior Maddee Winkler is the team’s “biggest leader.” She added that sophomore Gill Carroll has surprised her so far with being vocal.

“No team will be easy,” Dalak said of the Jack Pine Conference this year. She noted that she feels Clare is the preseason favorite to win the crown. She added, though, “every team has some strengths.”

Dalak said in terms of team goals the main goal will be to play hard defense all season long.

Leading the JV team this season will be Eddie Johns who is in his third year of coaching at HLHS. He has spent his first two with the boys program.

The JV girls team will have nine players with seven sophomores and two freshmen.

Johns reported that he expects his team to pressure on defense and hopefully out-pace some teams.

Johns is also the head coach of the varsity golf team at HLHS.

Both Bobcat squads opened their season on Monday night at Tawas with losses. They will be in action Friday night at home when they play Clare. The JV squad will tip-off at 6 p.m. while the varsity squad will take to the court at 7:30 p.m.
