Tip-up Town Kick-off on Saturday

Tip-up Town, U.S.A., 2013 is still a couple of weeks away, but the Kick-off is planned for this Saturday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. at Houghton Lake High School.

Three candidates are running for the title of Tip-up Town Queen 2013: Jennifer Hall, Mindy Debo and Marjery Fournier, all of Prudenville. The queen will be announced by judges at the Kick-off.

Two sets of mayor and marshal candidates will be showing off on stage at the Kick-off as well.

“Clown Around” Kevin Pease is running for mayor and “Jokin’ Jabberjaw” Jason Spears is running for marshal under the “Old School Party.” “Dumb and Dumber” candidates running are brothers Keith Swan and Karl Swan.

The two teams will vie for Tip-up Town “office,” relying on votes from audience members.

The Kick-off will also be the place where Polar Bear Dip jumpers may bid on the first 10 places in line (after the TUT Queen, who goes first if she chooses to jump). The first 10 Polar Bear Dip sweatshirts will feature the placement number of each bidder.

Also auctioned off at the Kick-off are the first 10 TUT badges. This year’s badge design was created by Katie Harrison, Ishpeming, granddaughter of Ken and Kathy Harrison of Houghton Lake. She is also the great-granddaughter of Ken Harrison Sr., who helped get Tipup Town started.

The first weekend of Tip-up Town is Jan. 18-20 and the second weekend is Jan. 25-27.

The Kick-off is free, but a dinner will be held beforehand from 5 to 7 p.m., consisting of hot dogs, sodas and snacks. The cost is $7 per person ($6 in advance – tickets are available at the Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce).
