Kumar faces health care fraud charges in Ogemaw County

Vijay Kumar, of West Branch, a Republican candidate for State Representative in Michigan’s 103rd District, was arraigned today in 82nd District Court, West Branch, on three counts of health care fraud, one count of Medicaid fraud and four counts of intentionally placing false information on a chart by a health care provider.

According to an Ogemaw County Prosecuting Attorney's Office press release, the charges stem from an investigation conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General, the Michigan Attorney General's Office, Blue Cross/Blue Shield investigators and the Michigan State Police involving five physical therapy businesses, all owned by Kumar.

If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison and/or fine of $50,000 on the the health care and Medicaid fraud and up to four years in prison and/or a fine of $5,000 on the false information charges.

His bond was set at $10,000. Hearing dates have been scheduled for Aug. 11 and 25.

Two counts of second degree criminal sexual conduct (sexual contact with a minor between the ages of 13 and 16) are still pending in 82nd District Court.
