Recall election on Nagel set for May

A recall election has been called for May 2, 2017, against Houghton Lake Community Schools board member Kevin Nagel.

Roscommon County Clerk/Register of Deeds Michelle Stevenson said because Nagel did not withdraw within 10 days of the petition being filed, his name will automatically be on the ballot.

Interested parties will need to file a minimum of four and a maximum of 10 signatures on a school board petition; or they may pay a $100 non-refundable filing fee, she said.

The deadline for filing to appear on the May ballot is Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.

Stevenson said if Nagel were to resign before the election is held, the election would be cancelled.

She noted that recalls are allowed only for actions that happened during the official’s term, but is limited. For example, a person serving a two-year term cannot be recalled the first six or last six months of the term and a person serving a four- or six-year term cannot be recalled in the first or last year of the term.

Stevenson said recalls can only be held in May or November.
