Post 72 trooper OK after crash on M-72

State Police Trooper Dave Dueman of Post 72, Houghton Lake, suffered minor injuries during the early morning hours of Jan. 3, when his patrol car was rear-ended by another vehicle on M-72 near Lake Valley Road in Kalkaska County.

According to MSP Sgt. David Johnson, Dueman had pulled over and parked on the shoulder of the roadway with his emergency lights activated at 5:45 a.m., and was exiting his vehicle to remove a deer carcass from the roadway. As he got out of his patrol car, he noticed an eastbound vehicle sliding toward him on the icy roadway, and jumped back into his vehicle to seek shelter.

The vehicle, driving by a 34-year- old Hemlock woman, struck the rear of the patrol car. Both Dueman and the Hemlock woman were examined at the scene of the accident by Bear Lake EMS, but were not transported. Dueman was later transported by another trooper to Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The Hemlock woman was cited for violation of the basic speed law.
