COA hosting Matter of Balance class beginning April 4

Roscommon County Commission on Aging will host a Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls class April 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Houghton Lake Center, located at 2625 South Townline Rd., Houghton Lake.

Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. By attending the eight two- hour long sessions held twice a week, participants will learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

The class can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. The fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, making the risk of falling even greater. Many elderly adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends.

The class is free, a workbook will be provided and refreshments will be served. For information or to register call Debra Looney at 366-0205.
