Biz Expo on tap April 26

Skilled Trades Showcase to follow next day at HLHS

The Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Business Expo April 26 in the Houghton Lake High School gym.

A vendor networking hour will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m. the expo will be open to the public. In addition to the many vendors that will be on site, there will be opportunities to taste samples from area restaurants, check out community resources and service groups, as well as enter into drawings and raffles. The business expo is free and open to the public.

Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Akin said that 92 vendors have signed up so far for the business expo. She added that the expo is not only beneficial to the vendors, but also the community. She said vendors are able to showcase their services and products and community members are able to attend the expo and see services that are provided in the area that they might not have known about before.

The next day the chamber will host the Houghton Lake Skilled Trades Showcase, which will feature over 20 skilled trades businesses, at the high school for HLHS juniors and seniors from 9 to 11 a.m.

This event will give area skilled trades businesses an opportunity to make connections and gain access to possible future employees. Akin noted that students will be able to learn about potential careers, what education and certifications are required for jobs and information on salaries. Representatives from the skilled trades departments from Baker College, Kirtland Community College and Mid Michigan Community College will also be on site. There is no charge for skilled trades businesses to attend this event.

“The Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce recognizes the need for more exposure to the skilled trades field. We hear daily from members that the workforce in these trades is diminishing,” Akin wrote in a letter to members. “We have a plan to try and boost the awareness of our youth and assist them in learning about all that the trades field has to offer.”

Students who attend the event will be asked to fill out a card with their contact information and the fields they are interested in. Those cards will then be used to generate a list of interested students. Businesses will then be given the names of students interested in their field.

In order to further promote the skilled trades, the chamber has recently dedicated two scholarships for HLHS students going into one of the trades programs at Kirtland Community College or Mid Michigan Community College.
