Weapons charges levied against Houghton Lake pair

Two Houghton Lake residents, both convicted felons, were arraigned in 82nd District Court Roscommon on weapons charges May 11.

Justin T. Bernard, 29, Houghton Lake, was arraigned on a weapons charge (dangerous weapon – miscellaneous) and demanded preliminary examination within 21 days. Bond was set at $25,000.

Amanda L. Davis, 30, Houghton Lake, demanded preliminary examination within 21 days on a weapons charge of possession or sale of a taser. Bond was set at $1,000.

According to a May 10 press release from the Michigan State Police, Houghton Lake Post, troopers responded to a report of an improvised firearm at a residence in Roscommon Township during the evening hours of May 9.

Upon investigation, troopers seized an unregistered, homemade pistol. They also found that Davis was in possession of an “illegal stun gun.” Continued investigation at the residence found that Bernard “was allegedly in possession of firearms and improvised explosives.”

Troopers received information that Bernard had discussed using homemade explosive devices to damage public infrastructure, and secured a search warrant for his home, where they recovered one improvised explosive device, a pistol and a long gun. Both Davis and Bernard were arrested and lodged in the Roscommon County Jail.

According to the MSP press release, the incident is still under investigation and may result in additional charges.
