Michigan’s Other Great Lakes Family Fishing Fest’ Saturday

In conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources Free Fishing Weekend, Roscommon County will host the third annual “Michigan’s Other Great Lakes Family Fishing Fest” Saturday.

Although free fishing will take place over the course of the entire weekend, the Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce, St. Helen Chamber of Commerce and Friends of Lyon Township will host their own events Saturday. Events will take place at the Richfield Township Lake St. Helen Access Park, Houghton Lake’s events will be held at the Houghton Lake South Shore Department of Natural Resources Boat Launch and Lyon Township’s Park 27 will be the site for the events at Higgins Lake.

“Michigan’s Other Great Lakes Family Fishing Fest” is a time for families to enjoy the county’s lakes while sharing time together fishing. As part of the event, a fishing contest will be held in which buttons will be given to the winners at each of the three lakes. Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Akin said there will be both an adult and children’s division and buttons will be given to the winner of each fish species category.

Lake St. Helen

Lake St. Helen event organizer John Bawol said the fishing contest in St. Helen will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, with weigh-in needing to be completed by 1 p.m.

He said there will be two fishing contest divisions for children and adults and prizes will be awarded based on weight.

Bawol added there will also be games, prizes and snacks on-site provided by the St. Helen Lake Association and the Roscommon County Economic Development Corporation.

It’s Bawol’s hope that the free fishing weekend will encourage people who have never fished before to try it out. He said it’s a good way to introduce people to the sport of fishing.

Higgins Lake

Weigh-in for the Higgins Lake fishing contest will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., however, Friends of Lyon Township member Don Nickel said events for Higgins Lake will be held at Park 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

He said during that time the park will host the Roscommon County Sheriff Auxiliary’s bounce house, a casting con‘ test will be held, a clown will be on-site and the Coast Guard Auxiliary will also be there. There will be door prizes, a bake sale and a raffle at 4 p.m.

Houghton Lake

Those who attend events at Houghton Lake will be able to compete in a kids casting contest provided by the Oldsmobile Outdoor Club and visit with the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary. There will also be prizes for those who enter a fish in the fishing contest and a chance to win a guided ice fishing trip at Higgins Lake. Weigh-in for the fishing contest at Houghton Lake will take place at noon.

The Boy Scouts and students from Skeels Christian School will be on site selling refreshments and snacks. Akin added fishing, water sport and outdoor vendors have been invited to attend to show off their displays.

Those fishing in Roscommon County are encouraged to tag photos they take while fishing or with their catches with #familyfishingfest2017. The photos will be used for future promotions and on the event’s Facebook page, which can be found by searching Michigan’s Other Great Lakes Family Fishing Fest.
