Society has become ‘shortsighted’

In the letter “No debate” from John Meyer in the July 6 Resorter, I was impressed that he agreed to allow transgender to serve our country, however his comment “but be careful not to break a nail or tear your pantyhose” is a direct example of how shortsighted our society has become.

Who says that transgender has to be a man in the likes of a woman? Doesn’t it occur both ways? His very one-sided view is exactly what holds us back as an accepting and embracing society. We are all citizens, we all have the same rights. Whether we are GLBTS (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and supportive), hetero or somewhere in between, we should all have the right to serve our country without the snide comments. Shame on you, John.
