‘Treerific Hike,’ ‘Movie in the Park’ among State Park events

Get outdoors and enjoy some free events planned at the North Higgins Lake State Park and South Higgins Lake State Park.

State Park Explorer Guide Mi­chelle Schepke has many activities planned. A Recreation Passport is required for entry to state parks. Call 821-6125 for information.

South Higgins Lake State Park

July 19

A “Treerific Hike” is planned for 2 p.m. at Marl Lake (across the street from South Higgins Lake State Park). “Come take a hike with us and discover some of the cool trees that are around Marl Lake.”

At 6 p.m., “Campfire Cooking!” is planned at host site 147. The event will take participants “beyond s’mores! Come check out what the host site has to offer and learn how you can make some cool camp fire snacks for yourself. Smiles and sam­ples are free.”

“Beautiful Birds” will be on tap at host site 147 at 8 p.m. Participants are invited to learn about and see some of Michigan’s amazing birds.

A “Movie in the Park” is planned at 8:30 p.m. at host site 147. A free family movie will be held outdoors.

July 21

A beach scavenger hunt will take place at 2 p.m. at the park store pa­vilion. “Come race other beach com­ers to see if you can get all the things on the list first.”

“Go Green” will be the topic of a 4 p.m. event about recycling. It will be held at host site 147.

Friday Fishing Frenzy is planned at 6:30 p.m. at the Marl Lake Access Site (across from the South Higgins Lake State Park). Poles, bait and prizes are provided. Ages 17 and up must have a fishing license.

A free basketball clinic in the day use parking lot is planned with Coach Mark Vick (www.coachvick.net) at 7:30 p.m.

July 22

Storytime is planned at host site 147 at 10:30 a.m. Presented by area librar­ies and the park explorer, a sto­ry and activ­ity are planned.

North Higgins Lake State Park

July 20

“What Floats Your Boat?” will feature information on Higgins Lake and the many fun activities associ­ated with it. Participants will also get to build their own boat and see if they can keep it afloat. The event is set for 4 p.m. at the beach pavilion.

At 7 p.m. at the beach pavilion, “Beautiful Birds” will take center stage. Participants are invited to learn about and see some of Michi­gan’s amazing birds.

An “Owl Prowl” is planned for 9 p.m. at the CCC Museum, across the street from North Higgins Lake State Park. “Come learn about owls. See if you can hear or see one for yourself when we take a hike and call them in.”

July 21

A free basketball clinic in the day use parking lot is planned with Coach Mark Vick (www.coachvick.net) at 5:30 p.m.

July 22

Storytime is planned at host site 147 at 10:30 a.m. Presented by area libraries and the park explorer, a sto­ry and activ­ity are planned.

A CCC Tour is planned at 2 p.m. at the CCC Museum, located across the street from the North Higgins Lake State Park. Those attending can “travel back in time with us and explore what the Civilian Conserva­tion Corps was all about!”

Archery 101 is planned at 4 p.m. at the CCC Museum. Equipment is provided. Must be eight or older to shoot.
