Richard Thorwald Liebum

Houghton Lake resident Richard Thorwald Liebum, 80, died Aug. 4, 2017, at Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital with his family by his side.

A private family Celebration of Life service will be held. Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel, handled arrangements.

He was born Jan. 27, 1937, in Lansing. He graduated from Lansing Eastern High School and served as a Pfc. E3 in the U.S. Army for the 487th Medical Company out of Ft. Hood.

On May 6, 1961, he and Delores A. De Ryke were united in marriage. He spent many years in printing sales for Speaker-Hines-Thomas of Lansing. The family had a cabin at Houghton Lake for many years and the couple moved from Portland to Houghton Lake in 2002.

He was the ultimate family man and role model for his wife, children and grandchildren. His family looked to him for guidance and he took it upon himself to ensure their needs were met. Although he loved hunting, fishing and boating, his true love was spending time with his family.

His friends were treated as family and those that had a chance to meet him remember him for his vibrant personality, sense of humor and overall compassion for others. He had the ability to light up a room and talk to anyone at any time or place, a rare, yet special trait that many admired him for.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Clarence and Eleanor (Cooper) Liebum; and brother, Lynford Liebum.

Surviving Mr. Liebum are his wife of 56 years, Delores A. Liebum of Houghton Lake; two daughters, Michelle Liebum Cronin of Portland and Angela (William) Lear of Portland; and four grandchildren, Alex Lear, Thomas (Ali) Cronin, Meredith Cronin and Alan Lear.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Manor Hospitality House, 1220 Medical Campus Dr., Traverse City, MI 49684.
