James Clinton 'Jay' Ross

A memorial service for James Clinton "Jay" Ross, 94, Loveland, CO, who died Nov. 3, 2016, at Sierra Vista Health Care Center, Loveland, CO, as a result of injuries incurred in a fall, will be held at Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel, Sept. 30 at noon. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m.

He was born April 30, 1922, in Flint, the son of Clarence and Neva Ross. He was one of four children. He graduated from Flint Central High School, where he lettered in baseball for four years.

He married his high school sweetheart, Mary M. Garand, June 20, 1942. A couple of months later, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought in the Pacific Theater, where he received a Purple Heart, among other stars and ribbons. He was honorably discharged Nov. 10, 1945.

Mr. Ross was hired by the Saginaw Bears as a pitcher soon after getting out of the Army, but this career was short-lived when he incurred a shoulder injury.

Afterward, he and his wife moved to Houghton Lake, where his parents lived, and owned and operated Ross Grocery Store. He and his wife worked there for some time and started their family. The grocery store eventually closed and he then worked as a bread delivery man, delivering to locations throughout northeast Michigan and for four years in Arizona, where he had moved his family.

In the early 1960s, he and his family moved back to Houghton Lake and eventually reopened the old store as Jay's Men's Apparel. He and his wife parted ways in 1975.

Later, he met and married the second love of his life, Norma Rowe. It was love at first sight and they were married Jan. 12, 1977. He was blessed to also expand his family at this time with her daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Tim Sherwood, and their son, Dustin.

Mr. Ross retired in his 70s and he and his wife spent many happy years in their home at Houghton Lake, feeding the squirrels, enjoying the outdoors and traveling. As they began to experience the ravages of time, Stephanie and Tim moved them to Loveland, CO, to an assisted living home near them. They spent their last years there, well taken care of and loved by all of their family and many friends.

His wife preceded him in death in 2015.

Surviving are his son, James C. (Joyce) Ross Jr.; daughter, Nancy K. (Brian) Toomey; stepdaughter, Stephanie (Tim) Sherwood; grandsons, James C. Ross III, Brian Wills and Dustin Sherwood; granddaughters, Lisa Seeley and MaryLee Knag; sister, Jennie (Buddy) Detmer and their family; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
