DNR Firefighters

Department of Natural Resources firefighters (left to right), Jake Figley, Ray Delaney, Amy DeRuiter, Randy Hartman and David Utley II serve the DNR’s Roscommon Management Unit, out of the Roscommon, Houghton Lake and West Branch offices. Not pictured is Tim Croxen. Forest fire officers and foresters work in all phases of fire suppression. Their unit consists of the counties of Roscommon, Ogemaw and Missaukee and part of the counties of Crawford and Iosco.

Figley said this year’s in-state fire season was “a little slow,” but two officers – Delaney and Utley – served on western fire assignments. Figley said most of the fires were in Montana, Idaho, Utah and Oregon. “We did quite a bit of prescribed burning for habitat,” he said, within the unit. He said they attended a fire near the end of September and that no burning permits will be issued until it rains. “Now it’s the beginning of drought conditions,” he said. “It would take significant rain [about one inch] to get out of that.”
