Writer questions Denton board’s judgement

Is the Denton Township Board using our tax dollars wisely for the benefit of the community?

In June this year, the board voted to purchase waterfront property adjacent to Sullivan Beach. Actually, it is across the side road from the beach and behind Chase Bank. The cost of this 176 feet of property on the waterfront was $279,000 or $1,585.00 per shoreline foot. They believe that was a good way to provide more parks for the public. It has a break wall, so there isn’t easy access for swimming. They stated that there is room for a dock if the township chooses to install one. The boat launch at that road end is difficult to use, so I question the purpose of the dock. Will this park attract more boaters? If so, where will they park their trailers? Vehicles at Sullivan Beach for swimming and boating are already parking on the business property of Eddie’s Bar.

Now the county has cleared the title to Outlot A, west of 9th Street, and they are considering what to do with it. At a Sept. 27 work session, the commissioners set a loose deadline of Nov. 21 to wrap up Outlot A. Commissioner [Gary] Stefanko suggested contacting state agencies to see if they want it, Commissioner [Marc] Milburn suggested that the property be offered to Denton Township. Controller Jodi Valentino suggested sending a letter to Denton Township to consider the option of taking on Outlot A.

Then Controller Valentino said she was approached by Denton Township officials at a recent Roscommon Township Association meeting who told her the township does not have interest in Outlot A.

Which officials are making board decisions without presenting the issue to the taxpayers? Why would the township pay nearly $300,000 for a piece of lakefront property and then reject property that could be acquired at way below market value?

I am concerned about the judgement and spending of the Denton Township Board.
