Janet Z. Manley

Longtime Houghton Lake Commu­nity Schools Board of Education mem­ber Janet Z. Manley, 84, Houghton Lake, died Oct. 3, 2017, at home, with her son by her side.

A memorial gathering will be con­ducted at a later date. Memorial contri­butions may be directed to the Hough­ton Lake High School drama program. Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel, handled arrangements.

She was born July 4, 1933, in Grosse Pointe, to Frank and Marie (Voncken) Zeegers. She graduated from high school and attended Michigan State Univer­sity. While at college she met Richard E. Manley and the couple married in East Lansing Dec. 3, 1955.

She worked for Oldsmobile Compa­ny as a secretary until the couple moved to Houghton Lake in 1963. She was in­volved with the community, serving on the Houghton Lake Community Schools Board of Education for 23 years, the Mid-Michigan Library League Board for 42 years and the Junior Miss Pageant (also known as Miss Houghton Lake Scholarship Program) for more than 30 years. She also served on Houghton Lake Public Library Board and was in­volved in Houghton Lake High School plays, musicals and band concerts. She was a member of the American Business Women Association, two book clubs and antique groups and was an avid antique collector.

Preceding her in death were her par­ents; husband, Richard E. Manley; and brother, Gordon Zeegers.

Surviving Mrs. Manley are her son, David R. Manley of Houghton Lake; and many close friends, including Yoshiko Miyakoshi of Chicago.
