Something to cheer about

Houghton Lake’s football team was unable to realize its goal of winning the school’s first District title last Friday in Millington.

The Cardinals, who were making their 14th consecutive playoff appearance, proved too much for the Bobcats, winning 55-28. But that’s not to say the Bobcats went down easy. Early on, the Bobcats stayed even with Millington but the Cardinals were able to capitalize on any mistake the Bobcats made and by halftime were up by 28 points. Houghton Lake continued to fight in the second half, but in the end it was Millington’s night.

It was great to see the support the community gave the Bobcats. From signs lining M-55 to an escort out of town on a charter bus paid for by donations to packed stands to the Houghton Lake High School Marching Band taking the field at Millington, the Bobcats had a large cheering section. This support is immeasurable to the young men.

The 2017 Bobcats became just the third class in Houghton Lake football history to win a playoff game – the first to do it since 2001. They also become the first team to have back-to-back playoff appearances since the 2005 and 2006 Bobcats accomplished the feat.

In the past two seasons, the Bobcats have scored a whopping 711 combined points. That’s more than any other two-year stretch in Bobcat football history. The ‘Cats have been enjoyable to watch and provided much for fans to cheer about. They’ve also set the bar high for future Bobcats.

Houghton Lake Coach Joe Holloway said it best: “They took us to the next level in our program’s growth.…This class wanted more, I hope the younger classes see that. As we move forward, the expectation of holding ourselves accountable and putting the team first is going to be there.”

We look forward to seeing next year’s Bobcats take the field, building on the foundation laid this fall.

In addition to football, we are also looking forward to tonight (Thursday) when the Houghton Lake volleyball team takes to the court in school’s first-ever chance at a Regional title.

The Bobcats beat Traverse City St. Francis Tuesday night after bringing home just the second-ever District Title in volleyball last week. It was the first loss in a Regional game for TCSF since 2014 – when Roscommon beat them – as the Gladiators had won back-to-back Regional titles before losing to the Bobcats.

Tonight at 7 p.m., the talented Bobcats will face Elk Rapids in the Regional Final at Houghton Lake High School.

The teamwork and determination the Bobcat netters have shown this season and postseason is fantastic. The enthusiasm and effort the team has is worthy of praise, as is the hardwork that led them to the Regional Finals.

We will be cheering tonight as the ‘Cats look to bring home a title. Come join us.

Go Bobcats!
