Veterans to be honored Friday at school ceremonies

Veterans in the Roscommon County area will be honored at several Veterans Day events. With Veterans Day falling on Saturday, area schools will mark the event with ceremonies on Friday.

Houghton Lake High School

Houghton Lake High School se­niors will welcome area veterans to the school’s 24th annual Veterans Day As­sembly Nov. 10 at the high school.

The Class of 2018 will host a re­ception for area veterans beginning at 8:15 a.m. in the high school caf­eteria. A breakfast buffet will be offered to veter­ans by Chartwell’s Food Service.

At 9 a.m., second grade students from Collins Elementary will sing pa­triotic songs to honored guests and vet­erans, followed by a candlelight proces­sional into the auditorium, led by a VFW Honor Guard at 9:15 a.m.

The Veterans Day program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude with a 21-gun salute by an Honor Detail of the Michi­gan

State Police and the playing of Taps.

As always, veterans are invited to participate in this important tradition for the community. Questions may be directed to Principal John Win­kler at 366-2005.

Houghton Lake Middle School

Houghton Lake Middle School will present a Veterans Day program Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the high school audito­rium.

Students will present readings and the choir and band will perform musical selections.

A quilt will also be given away to a veteran in attendance.

Legion offering lunch after Veterans Day observance

American Legion Post 245, 3564 South Reserve Rd., Houghton Lake, will hold a soup and sandwich lunch for the public Nov. 10.

As in the past, the meal will be held after the annual Veterans Day obser­vance at Houghton Lake High School.

Roscommon High School

Roscommon High School’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony will take place Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the gymnasium.

Prior to the ceremony, a coffee and donut reception will take place in the li­brary, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Veterans, their friends and family, as well as the public are encouraged to at­tend both events.

Our Lady of the Lake Regional Catholic School

A Veterans Day program is planned at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Catho­lic School Friday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m.

Veterans are invited to attend the pro­gram, which will take place in the caf­eteria.

Soup, sandwiches, desserts and cof­fee will be served following the pro­gram.

King Nursing and Rehabilitation Community

Heartland Hospice serving Northern Michigan will be recognizing veterans who are patients and residents at King Nursing and Rehabilitation Community with a special tribute by conducting a “Pinning Ceremony.”

In appreciation of their service and dedication to their country, veterans will receive a commemorative pin during this special ceremony today (Thursday, Nov. 9) at 10 a.m.

King Nursing and Rehabilitation Community is located at 2280 South Tower Hill Rd., Houghton Lake.
