Melvin C. Ward Jr.

Melvin C. Ward Jr., 80, Houghton Lake, died Nov. 5, 2017.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 19 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Prudenville, followed by a luncheon at the Houghton-Higgins Lake Elks Lodge.

He was born Dec. 8, 1936, in Detroit to Melvin and Frances (Christie) Ward. He was raised by his mother, grandmother and uncles.

After graduating from Cass Tech High School in Detroit, Mr. Ward enlisted in the United States Marines. Following the marines, he built a career in the communications industry working for the government and Michigan Bell, from where he retired. During his career, Mr. Ward earned a bachelor’s degree from Oakland University.

Mr. Ward was active in retirement with the Houghton Lake Moose, Houghton-Higgins Lake Elks Lodge and Jack A. Davenport Detachment 684 of the Marine Corps League, where he volunteered with Toys for Tots for several years.

He is survived by his three children, Chris (Shari) Ward, Matthew (Beth) and Laura Ward; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his sister, Kathy Burdette.

The Ward family expressed their gratitude to all who enjoyed time with their father. "We know he enjoyed that time with you."
