Dorothy Irene Sommer

Dorothy Irene Sommer, 86, Hough­ton Lake, died Jan. 6, 2018, at King Nursing and Rehabilitation Community.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday, Jan. 11) at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Ted Voll officiating. Interment will be in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Visita­tion was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednes­day, Jan. 10 at Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel.

Born on Feb. 13, 1931, in Highland Park, she was the daughter of Arthur and Muriel (Robson) Pitcher. She grew up in the Detroit area graduating from Detroit Southeastern High School. She was mar­ried

Jan. 19, 1951, in Detroit, to John W. Sommer. She spent her married years as a homemaker and devoted wife and mother. She was a volunteer with Oak­wood Hospital Guild in Dearborn for 23 years. The couple moved from Dear­born to Houghton Lake in 1992, where they had been coming to their cabin for several years. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, St. John Luther­an Church Ladies Aide and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting and will be remembered for desserts she brought to the monthly Republican com­mittee meetings.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Shirley Patterson.

Surviving are her husband of almost 67 years, John W. Sommer of Houghton Lake; daughters, Linda (John) Duskey of Colorado, Janis Cameron of Grand Blanc and Barbara (Edwin) Oswald of Canton; son, Gary (Brenda) Sommer of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, El­mer Pitcher of Northville, Ronald Pitch­er of Ohio and Mark Pitcher of Brown­stown; sister, Glenda Chickonoski of Sterling Heights; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions can be directed to St. John Lutheran Church.

Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel, handled the arrangements.
