Geraldine Agnes Mayhew

St. Helen resident Geraldine Agnes Mayhew, 91, died Jan. 31, 2018, at The Lighthouse at Roscommon Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Helen Catholic Church Feb. 5. Father John Greene and Sister Barbara Matievich, O.P., officiated. Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home, St. Helen, handled arrangements. 

She was born Sept. 5, 1926, in Detroit, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Fernette) Jacobs. She had lived in St. Helen since 1996 and was formerly of Sterling Heights. 

She retired from working as a nurse for 20 years at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit. She was a doula and midwife for several years. She was a devoted Catholic, a member of the St. Helen Catholic Church and a Eucharistic minister who provided Eucharist to the home bound.

She was passionate about dancing and was also a member of the Arthur Murray Dance Studio where she won several competitions. She enjoyed her trips to Florida, gardening, shopping and traveling. She was an avid deer hunter and also enjoyed her time around water and nature.

Preceding her in death were her parents and 10 siblings.

Surviving are her husband, Leonard Mayhew of St. Helen; children, Gary (Marjorie) Williams of Cheboygan, Dennis (Joyce) Williams of Hertford, NC, Shelley Williams of Ypsilanti, Laurie Turner of Rochester Hills, Michele Ericksen of Grand Rapids, Kathy (Mark) Schienle of Sterling Heights, Karen (Thomas) Justin of Sterling Heights and Leonard (David) Mayhew of Traverse City; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Roscommon County Animal Shelter or St. Helen Catholic Church.
