About the Houghton Lake Resorter & Roscommon County Herald-News
The Houghton Lake Resorter covers all of Roscommon County each week with news and photos from Houghton Lake, Prudenville, Houghton Lake Heights, Higgins Lake, Roscommon and St. Helen. Our coverage area also extends to portions of Crawford (South Branch Township) and Missaukee (Merritt area) counties.
The Resorter also covers Houghton Lake Community Schools, Roscommon Area Public Schools, Charlton Heston Academy, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Catholic School and Kirtland Community College.
The first issue of the Houghton Lake Resorter was printed in 1940. The Resorter was purchased by Robert J. and Alice M. Hamp in 1961 and has remained in the Hamp family since. After the retirement of Robert J. Hamp Jr. in the early 1980s, Thomas W. Hamp served as publisher and editor until his retirement in 2012. Eric M. Hamp is the third-generation Hamp to serve as publisher and editor. Bryan A. Hamp serves as the production manager.
In 2009, the Resorter purchased its longtime competitor, the Roscommon County Herald-News. The RCHN is the county’s oldest publication and the purchase gave the Resorter the RCHN’s archives dating back to the late 1800s.
A longtime member of the Michigan Press Association, the Resorter has won numerous awards from the MPA over the years.
