Clifton R. Halliday


Longtime Houghton Lake business owner Clifton R. Halliday, 85, Houghton Lake died May 15, 2022, at Houghton Lake.

Visitation was held Wednesday, May 18, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel, and today (Thursday, May 19), from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m., at Houghton Lake Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Bryan Thompson officiating. Interment will be in Roscommon Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Houghton Lake Wesleyan Church. 

He was born May 29, 1936, in Howell, to Charles and Lisette (Heard) Halliday. He was married Aug. 28, 1954, in Lake City, to Edah L. Carpenter, who preceded him in death. He later married Louise Spurgeon May 29, 2019, at Houghton Lake. 

In 1963, he started Cliff’s Sand & Gravel and later started Halliday Sand & Gravel with his wife, Edah. He was a member of Houghton Lake Wesleyan Church and enjoyed working and running the heavy equipment at the shop, spending time with his family, playing the guitar, dancing and watching western movies and football.  

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Edah L. Halliday; brothers, Charles Halliday and Walter Halliday; and sisters, Betty Halliday, Marion Warner, Katherine Wendel and Frances Jeske.

Surviving Mr. Halliday are his wife, Louise Halliday; daughter, Lucendia Halliday; son, Cliff (Debra) Halliday Jr.; stepchildren, Kenneth (Debra) Spurgeon, Michael Spurgeon and Karen Salyers; grandchildren, Chauncey (Michelle Foster) Halliday, Nathan Halliday and Valentina Halliday; stepgrandchildren, Brittany Spurgeon, Megan Spurgeon and Derek Sanders; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Meghan, Brayden and Khloe Halliday; stepgreat-grandchildren, Logan, Haleigh and Ryleigh Foster and Gabriella and Isabella Sanders; and sister, Freda Akin.
